More About the Kootenays?
The ferry rides that connect the various parts
of the lake areas of the
Kootenays give the region a distinct 'island
feel'. Sternwheelers were once
the primary means of travel along the
glacier-fed lakes and rivers that
bisect the grand scenery of the Purcell, Selkirk
and Monashee Mountain
Ranges.
The region is known for its many breathtaking
wilderness attractions such as
the Valhallas, Kokanee Glacier, the Goat Range
and Jumbo Pass to name a few.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a wide variety of
experiences in unspoiled
settings far from the maddening crowds.
Often on insider tips, people visit the
Kootenays for world-class mountain
biking, mountaineering, powder skiing, water
sports, golfing, fishing and
bird watching. Visitors can explore our rich
mining history, artisan
communities, outdoor markets, festivals and
museums and end the day with a
relaxing soak in one of the region's many
hot springs. The natural beauty of
the area has attracted scores of artists and
artisans and their presence has
been instrumental in the blossoming of the
Kootenays' many vibrant
communities such as Nelson, Kaslo, Nakusp,
Crawford Bay and Creston.
