More About the Kootenays?The ferry rides that connect the various parts of the lake areas of the Kootenays give the region a distinct 'island feel'. Sternwheelers were once the primary means of travel along the glacier-fed lakes and rivers that bisect the grand scenery of the Purcell, Selkirk and Monashee Mountain Ranges. The region is known for its many breathtaking wilderness attractions such as the Valhallas, Kokanee Glacier, the Goat Range and Jumbo Pass to name a few. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a wide variety of experiences in unspoiled settings far from the maddening crowds. Often on insider tips, people visit the Kootenays for world-class mountain biking, mountaineering, powder skiing, water sports, golfing, fishing and bird watching. Visitors can explore our rich mining history, artisan communities, outdoor markets, festivals and museums and end the day with a relaxing soak in one of the region's many hot springs. The natural beauty of the area has attracted scores of artists and artisans and their presence has been instrumental in the blossoming of the Kootenays' many vibrant communities such as Nelson, Kaslo, Nakusp, Crawford Bay and Creston. How to Get to the Kootenays?There are a number of routes into the Kootenays. 1) Visiting Banff & Lake Louise?- From Lake Louise, take Highway 1 through Golden to Revelstoke then to Shelter Bay and take the marvelous (free) ferry ride from Shelter Bay over to Galena Bay. You would then start your tour of the Kootenays in Nakusp Click on: Arrow Lakes / Slocan 2) Visiting Canmore & Banff ?- From Banff, take Highway 93 to Radium Hot Springs where you will start with the East Kootenays. Click on: Kootenays East/Source of the Waters After seeing Invermere and Windermere, head down Highway 93/95 to Kimberley and Cranbrook. Click on: Kootenays East/BC Rockies From Creston, take 3A up the east arm of Kootenay Lake, Click on: Kootenay Lake East cross from Kootenay Bay to Balfour on the free ferry and continue your tour of the Kootenays either north to Kaslo or south to Nelson Click on: Kootenay Lake West 3) Coming south from Golden?Click on: Kootenays East/Source of the Waters 4) Arriving in Calgary?- Go south on 22 through Black Diamond. Be sure an see the Frank Slide. You may want to stop over in Crowsnest Pass or one of the towns of the B.C. Rockies (Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie). Click on: Kootenays East / BC Rockies Continue west on 3/95 to Creston and then either go up 3A on the west arm of Kootenay Lake Click on: Kootenay Lake East or come west on Highway 6 to Salmo, Castlegar, or Nelson. Click on: Kootenay Lake West 5) Coming from Vancouver?Take Highway 3 from Hope through Princeton, then Osoyoos and Grand Forks. Click on: Border Kootenays / Lady Columbia 6) Coming from Kelowna?
