Kootenays East / B.C. Rockies

Crowsnest Pass links Southern Alberta with the
Elk Valley where the Elk River passes through
Elkford, Sparwood, and Fernie before joining the
Kootenay River near Cranbrook. The scenery of
Elkford is lovely and the wildlife abundant.
Nearby Sparwood boasts the world's largest
tandem axle dump truck, larger than a house. The
area is coal country and tours of the local mine
are offered during the summer.
Fernie has wonderful skiing, mountain biking,
and fly-fishing. The town is a charming railroad
town with fine examples of Victorian
architecture.
Visit Fort Steele where you step back in time to
1897 when the mining of silver, lead and zinc
made the town prosper. View the 57 restored
buildings guided by locals in colourful period
costumes or enjoy a spirited comedy at the Wild
Horse Theatre.
In Cranbrook visit the Ktunaxa Kinbasket
Interpretive Centre and shop for First Nations'
crafts at the Many Hands Cooperative. The
Canadian Museum of Rail Travel located in
Cranbrook has on display a unique collection of
classic antique railcars.
Visit the unique shops of Kimberley sometimes
called the "Bavarian City of the Rockies."
Canada's largest cuckoo clock can be found here.
In July, the sounds of accordions fill the town
during the accordion championships.
